Edgar M. Johnson, Jr. began the practice as a sole proprietor in 1973. In 1983, Debbie J. Burgess became a partner, and the firm name was changed to the more recognized Johnson, Burgess & Company. Over the years, the firm has grown steadily and rapidly, and in 1996 the firm name was changed to Johnson, Burgess, Mizelle & Straub. 

The firm now employs 4 CPA's and 9 non-licensed staff to service a continuously growing clientele. Today, with active practices in accounting and auditing, tax planning and preparation, technology consulting and application, and small business consulting, Johnson, Burgess, Mizelle & Straub has evolved into a full-fledged accounting and consulting firm serving the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
